Meet Wine Hardware in Walnut Creek

Elliott Mackey opened Wine Hardware in 1973. Mike Vecchia joined in 2001; he and Cari bought the place in 2014 and have run it themselves since. Walk into our Walnut Creek showroom and you are talking to an owner.

What do you reach for on a quiet evening? What are you saving for ten years from now? Bring both. The racking, the cooling and the room get planned around the way you actually drink.

Our history

From Elliott Mackey to Mike and Cari

Since 1973, one small Walnut Creek shop, handed from one family to another.

  1. 1973

    Elliott Mackey opens Wine Hardware

    A shop for people who had run out of room for their bottles. The name has not changed since.

  2. 2001

    Mike Vecchia joins

    Mike came on in 2001 and led the Walnut Creek and Napa Valley stores from the day each one opened.

  3. 2014

    Mike and Cari buy the business

    Mike joined in 2001. He and Cari bought the business in 2014 and still run it themselves.

  4. 2021

    Wine goes on the shelf

    Small, family-run wineries, the kind of business Mike and Cari were already running.

  5. The club

    Karl's Cellar Club

    A quarterly club of small, family-owned producers, seven levels to pick from, named after Karl, the shop dog.

  6. Today

    Cellars across the Bay Area

    We design and supply cellars from San Francisco condos to Alamo estates, plus restaurants and wineries, all from our Walnut Creek showroom.

    Owners

    Mike sizes the cooling, draws the racking and tells you when a repair is not worth it. Cari runs the shop and chose the wine on the shelf.

    Karl

    Sip Operations Manager

    Karl is the namesake of Karl's Cellar Club and the only member of staff who sleeps through inventory. He is usually somewhere near the glassware.

Racking standing up in redwood, mahogany, pine and metal. Transtherm and Le Cache cabinets you can open. Glassware in daylight and boutique wine behind the counter.

Weekdays 9:30am to 5:30pm, Saturday by appointment, closed Sunday.

I called Wine Hardware in desperate search of a replacement cooling unit for my wine vault. Michael the owner helped me quickly, was completely knowledgeable on what exactly I needed, and I was able to complete the replacement order in under 15 minutes. The unit arrived and is up and running in less than a week.

Questions about working with us

Are you a contractor?
We handle the cellar from plan through installation. We design and supply it, and Mike brings in the contractors he has worked with to build and install it. If you already have a general contractor on a larger remodel, Mike works alongside them.
Do you only serve Walnut Creek?
No. We work across Contra Costa and Alameda counties and out to San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma and the Peninsula. Fifteen cities have their own page; the list is not a fence.
Can I buy just a cooling unit or a rack kit?
Yes, and plenty of people do. Send the room dimensions and wall build-up before you order a compressor, though. An undersized unit is the most expensive way to save money on a cellar.
Do you service what you sell?
Call with the model and what changed. Warranty claims go through the manufacturer; we will tell you what they will ask for and what the next call should be.
