What to know before you buy

  • Load first, model second

Room volume, insulation, glass area and the temperature next door decide the size. The model number is the answer, not the question.

  • Where does the heat go?

Every unit rejects heat somewhere: a garage, a mechanical room, outside. Self-contained units need that space behind the wall; split systems move it.

  • Noise is a design decision

A through-wall unit next to a dining room will be heard. Ducted and split systems put the compressor where nobody is sitting.

  • Humidity matters as much as temperature

Review the room’s humidity conditions alongside cooling. Some systems offer humidity management; a separate humidifier may be appropriate for other rooms. Confirm the selected equipment’s capabilities before ordering.

Separate the cellar evaporator from the condenser with a WhisperKOOL split system. This selection includes compact Platinum, larger Platinum and ceiling-mount configurations, plus fully ducted options when the evaporator also needs to sit away from the display. Each arrangement changes the space, connections and service access the project requires.

Bring the cellar and equipment-location plans to Wine Hardware before the walls are finished. Confirm the model output, line set, controls and any exterior housing with your installer. Ask our Walnut Creek team about equipment availability and freight. Ask about fit at Wine Hardware.

Shop Ceiling Mount for Wine Lovers

Use the ceiling as part of the equipment plan with WhisperKOOL Ceiling Mount cooling. The 4000, 8000 and Mini Ceiling Mount listings offer alternatives to placing the evaporator among the wall racks. Condensate handling, ceiling access and the condenser location need to be considered while the cellar is being designed.

Send Wine Hardware a ceiling plan, room measurements and your intended racking layout. We can help compare the named systems and their included components. Confirm the installation requirements, thermostat choice and delivery arrangements before ordering. Ask about fit at Wine Hardware.

Split-system evaporators that hang from the cellar ceiling, drawing the warm air that collects up there without taking a single bottle of racking space. Ceiling Mount 4000 and 8000, and the ductless Mini for small rooms.

WhisperKOOL Fully Ducted Split Systems

Plan the display and the equipment as separate parts of the cellar with the Fully Ducted Platinum Split 4000 or 8000. The listed systems use liquid bottle probes and electronic controls, with evaporator placement described up to 25 duct feet from the room. The two models have different published outputs.

Show Wine Hardware the room, duct routes and proposed condenser position. Line sets are not included in these listings, so confirm the complete installation schedule and optional housing with your installer. Ask our Walnut Creek team about freight and availability. Ask about fit at Wine Hardware.

The Fully Ducted Platinum Split 4000 and 8000 keep the equipment out of the cellar. The evaporator sits in a service space, the condenser outside, and ducting carries the cold air in.

Questions about shop split systems for wine lovers

What size cooling unit do I need?
It depends on the volume of the room, how it is insulated, how much glass it has and how warm the space next door gets. As a guide from the manufacturers' own ratings: a CellarPro 1800XT is for cellars up to 250 cubic feet, a WhisperKOOL Extreme 3500ti up to 800, an Extreme 8000ti up to 2,000, and the Wine Guardian ducted range runs from 400 to 8,500. Send us the numbers and we will do it properly.
Self-contained, ducted or split?
Self-contained units combine their main components; ducted systems connect the equipment to the cellar through ductwork; split systems separate components. Compare the exact models’ installation, sound, heat rejection and service requirements for the room.
Can I install it myself?
Installation requirements depend on the exact model. Through-wall, ducted and split systems have different requirements for mounting, airflow, power and drainage. Split systems also require qualified refrigeration work; review the manufacturer’s instructions with your installer before ordering.
