What to know before you buy

  • Load first, model second

Room volume, insulation, glass area and the temperature next door decide the size. The model number is the answer, not the question.

  • Where does the heat go?

Every unit rejects heat somewhere: a garage, a mechanical room, outside. Self-contained units need that space behind the wall; split systems move it.

  • Noise is a design decision

A through-wall unit next to a dining room will be heard. Ducted and split systems put the compressor where nobody is sitting.

  • Humidity matters as much as temperature

Review the room’s humidity conditions alongside cooling. Some systems offer humidity management; a separate humidifier may be appropriate for other rooms. Confirm the selected equipment’s capabilities before ordering.

Add the control or humidity component your cellar calls for with Wine Guardian accessories. Stand-alone and integrated humidifiers use different mounting arrangements, while a remote interface and sensors address where conditions are read and controlled. The existing cooling unit and the intended location should guide the choice.

Tell Wine Hardware the system model and the result you need, whether that is a control outside the room or readings from another part of the cellar. Confirm compatible components, cabling and installation requirements before ordering through our Walnut Creek team. Ask about fit at Wine Hardware.

Questions about shop wine guardian accessories

What size cooling unit do I need?
It depends on the volume of the room, how it is insulated, how much glass it has and how warm the space next door gets. As a guide from the manufacturers' own ratings: a CellarPro 1800XT is for cellars up to 250 cubic feet, a WhisperKOOL Extreme 3500ti up to 800, an Extreme 8000ti up to 2,000, and the Wine Guardian ducted range runs from 400 to 8,500. Send us the numbers and we will do it properly.
Self-contained, ducted or split?
Self-contained units combine their main components; ducted systems connect the equipment to the cellar through ductwork; split systems separate components. Compare the exact models’ installation, sound, heat rejection and service requirements for the room.
Can I install it myself?
Installation requirements depend on the exact model. Through-wall, ducted and split systems have different requirements for mounting, airflow, power and drainage. Split systems also require qualified refrigeration work; review the manufacturer’s instructions with your installer before ordering.
